Who says you have to pack everything up into the car and drive off to a park or beach to enjoy a picnic?
If you’ve got a patio, a picnic table, or even just a soft patch of grass for a blanket in your backyard, you’re just steps away from a perfect picnic spot, without the travel or traffic.
A wicker picnic basket is a part of the classic picnic paradigm. It’s a convenient way to carry all the goodies but it’s not essential to a lovely afternoon nosh. A bag or a tray will do the job nicely. But let’s go with the picnic basket for now, just for fun.
What Do You Want To Fill That Picnic Basket With?
Maybe the traditional romantic loaf of bread, cheese and a jug of wine sets the right mood.
Packing this basket is quick and easy. A French baguette or loaf of Greek bread fits the image. Bring some butter, a couple of knives and some cheese. Bring along a bottle of your favorite wine. Throw a blanket over your shoulder, and you are ready to head into your backyard.
Then again, you might stuff that basket full of hearty foods like leftover barbecued chicken or subs. Some apples, bananas or grapes would be a great finish to a summer meal. If you’re not going the “jug of wine” route, take along a thermos with cold drinks.
Sub Sandwich Ingredients:
- Sub buns or French bread
- Sliced or shaved sandwich meats
- Cheese – sliced or shredded
- Cucumber slices
- Green Pepper slices
- Tomato slices
- Salt and Pepper
Slice open the bread or bun. Spread butter, mayonnaise or mustard.
Put some meat slices on first. Follow with lettuce, tomato slices and other veggies of your choice. Top with cheese.
Place the subs in a sandwich bag or use plastic wrap. Put them in your basket. Leftover barbecued chicken can go in plastic containers or wrap. And don’t forget to pack some fruit and a thermos of iced tea or juice.
Pop on your wide-brimmed straw hat, grab your basket and blanket and head out into your backyard.
